What is this blog about? Quite simply, as I said in my first post, it’s about getting to know and to love God by exploring the YouCat and the Catechism of the Catholic Church; to do good according to his will through sharing and connecting with others about the faith and trusting that will help us all get to heaven. That’s really about it.
How I came about the idea for this blog isn’t quite as simple. My family and I switched parishes about a year ago. Our new parish doesn’t have confirmation until Junior year of high school. My two oldest daughter’s were both confirmed at our old parish, but my youngest had not. About a month ago she asked me if there was any way she could get confirmed at our old parish because the kids she knew there were going to be confirmed this year and she wanted to be confirmed with them. I contacted the parish and spoke with the pastor who was more than willing to allow her to join the class. So I took her to the class and they gave her a copy of the YOUCAT. I immediately got excited because I had read about it and knew it was going to be a great resource. I think that’s when the Holy Spirit took over.
I sat down and started looking through the YOUCAT and thought it was something that every Catholic youth should have. As I flipped through the pages, I was impressed by how simply organized and straight forward it was in presenting the faith. It occurred to me that it was a simple way for anyone to get an overview of the faith and that, when coupled with the accompanying references to the actual Catechism, it could really help deepen one’s faith. A simple question followed by a succinct answer just seemed like a cool way to present the faith. The short answers to each question looked like they might well fit within the 140 character limits of a tweet; and, as a social media enthusiast, I thought it would be cool to tweet about the YOUCAT. So, I thought I would create a twitter account to do just that.
If you’re reading this, you probably are familiar with Twitter and you know that you have to have a Twitter name. What name would I pick for a guy that tweets mostly about the YOUCAT? Well, it seemed simple that people would remember me as that YOUCAT guy; so, hey, why not just call it that? YOUCATGuy.
But the Holy Spirit wasn’t done. He’s sneaky like that. Somehow just tweeting about the YOUCAT didn’t seem to be quite enough. So, He hit me with the idea to start a blog about it too – a place to focus on the topics in the YOUCAT, relate them back to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and some practical thoughts as He inspires me. So, we’ll see how this goes.
I’m not a theologian, nor do I have any degrees in any area of religious study. I have an engineering technology degree from the University of Dayton. I’m just an average sinner looking to find my way and hopefully help a few others find theirs too. I’m happily married to my wife of 19 years with three beautiful girls and two dogs. I love soccer and have been coaching for 9 years at the club level. If you’re a soccer fan, you might catch some of my tweets about the world’s game at @heycoachdoug (my personal Twitter account).
I hope you find some nuggets of inspiration here. I hope it serves as a tool to help us all deepen our faith through our study of the YOUCAT. In the words of our Holy Father, “Study this Catechism! That is my heartfelt desire. This Catechism was not written to please you. It will not make life easy for you, because it demands of you a new life.”
